Gentleman's Retreat

The second-floor room Gary Inman was assigned was neither sunny nor interesting in shape. The room was quite frankly a challenging space. From the rubble of a room, Gary somehow came up with a vision. He was going to create a resting, relaxing reading room for the man of the house - a "Gentleman's Retreat". To accomplish this, lots of changes were needed.

The first components of the concept (see Michelangelo's Dens for more details) required new paint - everywhere! From baseboards to walls, window frames, doors, crown moulding and even the ceiling, everything was painted with texture and light in mind! Imagine tortoiseshell patterns on the mouldings and a brushed-metal finish on the ceiling!

Next came the textile choices and installations. Gary used cashmere for the drapes, with a valance of metal grommets, a rugged sisal for the floor covering, gray flannel for the seating and a new product for the wall covering. Since this was the debut of this wall covering, Gary personally got involved in the installations. This new product could make or break the "look" of the room.

The room turned out great! The photographs don't do the room justice because the totality of the furnishings, details, colors, and spatial arrangement can't be experienced two-dimensionally. All (including fellow designers) remarked that the room is spectacular. And, that new wall covering is REAL LEATHER! That edgy triumph took real courage, but what appeal! This feature will certainly be in great demand.

Also noteworthy is the extreme attention to detail. The symmetry of the bookshelves, the well-chosen accessories and even the matching leather computer screen show the greatest level of design intuition.
