Mr. Pavarini presented the quintessential visual treat where culture and romance whispered to the luxuriant styles of the ages. From the detailed carving of the Bergamo fabrics to the Art Deco furniture, this room is the picturesque setting a master bedroom can only dream of. The use of LED lighting is masterful, especially the radiant treatment on the headboard and makes the sumptuous fabrics seem warmer and creamier. This is an eloquent example of how to fold up-to-the-minute technology into an ageless creation.

Room Description

Welcome to a bedroom called “Buona Notte.” While it means “goodnight” in Italian, the room is designed to evoke passion and romance through color and drama. The French Chateau floor, architectural woodworking, the new collection of textiles by Bergamo, and the LED lighting system by Phillips all work together to provide the background for a room layered with 19th and 20th century antiques and artistic detail.

All the Details

Charles Pavrini Buona Nottre

The floor was taken from a chateau in France. Provided by Exquisite Surfaces, intellectually it grounds the space, providing the classical roots for the melding of the contemporary architectural elements with Neoclassical and Art Deco Furniture.

Grandson of one of New York City’s primary 20th century construction companies, Charles Pavarini III demonstrates his architectural background in the structure of the room. He enhanced the space architecturally to give interest and dimension while balancing its proportions. Beveled walls along the North and East Elevation harmonize and bring focus to the room’s furnishings. Anagree architectural woodworking encapsulates the LED ambient lighting in the crown below the ceiling of the room and frames the bay window area. Antiqued silver leaf chair-rail, base, and crown moldings by Elaine Certa give accent and merge Old-World craftsmanship with the contemporary woodwork.

Bergamo has been so generous as to donate over 200 yards of their latest line of contemporary fabrics. The new palette introduces Mauve and Taupe to the 21st Century along with highlights of spring green. Fabric is used liberally throughout the space, creating the Renaissance-reminiscent bed chamber and upholstered walls. The bed chamber area is designated by Bergamo velvet drapery panels cascading from the ceiling. For three weeks, 8 artisans at Penn & Fletcher performed cutwork and cordonet embroidery along the panels to echo the damask pattern of the floating upholstered wall and headboard.

The damask wall and headboard telescope from the velvet upholstered West wall to give prominence to the bed chamber. Finished in Bergamo’s latest contemporary damask, the effect is created with LED backlighting and pattern matching to express a contemporary reinterpretation of a Renaissance concept of comfort and luxury.

Phillips Electronics provided all of the LED ambient lighting. Controlled by computer, the system has been programmed to provide a romantic glow through the use of soft pastel colors. Operating on a timed cycle, the system allows for subtle color transitions to illustrate different lighting moods.

Wireless Control 4 has been installed to operate the integrated audio components and to control ambient dimming. The system is wireless and communicates via radio frequency. The stereo and speakers have been concealed in the wall behind hidden panels in the wall upholstery below the chair rail molding.

Cirle of Light Spanning the early nineteenth through the twentieth century, the antique furnishings were selected for their simplicity and clear sense of style. The 1940’s Art Deco pieces by French Furniture Artisan Jules Leleu include the Rosewood and Bronze Ormolu Desk and bombé Commode with mother-of-pearl inlay. Their sensual lines contrast the severity of the Russian Neoclassical oval table at the foot of the bed and the Louis XVI-style bedside tables. The Swedish 1830 parcel gilt, concave-sided mirrors above trace the shape of the bottom of the commode and bring unexpected whimsy to the elevation, which is flanked by the more serious 19th century French Victorian Sconces. Antique lighting pieces include the 1918 Art Deco Single sconce by the entrance and the Simonet Frères French Art Deco Chandelier from the 1930’s which hangs in the bed chamber.

To complement all of the contemporary woodwork while contrasting the antique furnishings, the draperies and upholstered furniture pieces were produced for the room. The Lounge Chair was custom designed by Mr. Pavarini and manufactured by Anthony Lawrence-Belfair who also produced the desk chair and window treatments. Of particular interest, the embroidery on the Bergamo horsehair of the desk chair was designed by Penn & Fletcher and reflects the design of the metalwork on the single sconce. The Elyseé Chair by Niermann Weeks Lounge Chair by Lorin Marsh and metal and mirror side table by Carole Gratale represent current furniture pieces that exhibit a more relaxed style as dictated by the window shutters provided by Window Works of Livingston, NJ. Bed linens include the chestnut mink pillows and throw and are all by Anichini.

Finishing-off the dreamy aesthetic of ‘Buonanotte’, the celestial painting by Spec-Fin Designs adds that note of fantasy and artistic license with its ethereal representations of the constellations Pegasus, Aries and Aquarius.
