The Entry Hall, along with the Upstairs Gallery, is the gateway to this elegant Monterey Colonial home. To introduce other areas, colorful and sophisticated vignettes have been created. Against a dramatic chocolate brown background, fabrics in bright and lively colors will enhance the look of the understated, transitional furniture and window treatments. The areas are accessorized with oriental rugs and runners, plants and collections of art.

An English pine paneled Library, is original to the house. The room is warm and inviting using bold colors of red and black combined with natural hues and fibers to reinforce the Colonial style. Black and white animal prints combined with leather books and mementos from a trip to Africa fill the built-in bookcases flanking the room. The Powder Room continues the feel of nature with multicolored glass tiles mimicking slivers of bamboo used as wainscoting throughout. An ebony finished Pullman with an ebony and bronze faucet and handles compliments the large bronze sink. Faux painting creates the leather-like look on the walls; and the floor is walnut colored limestone. The new cabinets in the Bar with honed black granite counter and the swirled mosaic glass backsplash harmonize with the room’s color palette and add contemporary flair. The honed walnut colored limestone flooring adds texture.

This elegant outdoor living and dining area is reminiscent of an Eighteenth Century Portuguese Courtyard. The newly constructed pergola, draped in fabrics and trims, provides a sheltered dining space. Comfortable seating areas will be clustered throughout the courtyard, with the focal point being a beautiful hand-painted mural on the rear wall, centered by water gardens and koi ponds. The entire courtyard is surrounded on all sides by Mediterranean themed gardens filled with the smells of citrus and lavender.

Tribute is paid to Thomas Oliver Larkin, the Bostonian that arrived in Monterey, California in 1832 and who is credited with influencing the domestic architectural style of this elegant Monterey Colonial Home. Function, technology and cooking comfort are center stage. A palette of soft warm grays and golden straw unify the visual connections to the adjoining spaces. The “Yankee” influence on the Monterey Style extends to every detail. Custom cabinets reminiscent of the American Chest-on-chest and a refrigerator resembling a Sheraton high chest, artisan wall finishes replicating Colonial candle wicking; textiles from Lee Jofa fabrics that appear homespun; carrara marble plank floors with marble and stone inlays as well as a custom stainless steel farmer’s sink; state-of-the-art appliances by Thermador; 17th Century breakfast room chairs, trestle table, and display cabinet; and antique oil paintings of ancestors, ships, and landscapes. In the Grocer’s Pantry, the only original cabinets in the kitchen area remain and were replicated to provide broom closets and bulk storage. A HD Plasma Wall Mount Television with custom art is recessed into the family room wall.

Susan Sawasy and James Hernandez
1605 Hope Street, Suite 110, South Pasadena, CA 91030

The Kitchen Terrace serves to extend the living, dining and family space to the outdoors. The ‘California Lifestyle’ that blurs the line between indoors and outdoors is illustrated in this area by the use of fabrics and furniture designed to be installed out doors but that would enhance an interior space just as easily. The cooking takes place in the grill garden. Large outdoor pots with flourishing vines of tomatoes and vegetables surround this state-of-the-art kitchen.

Back Door Guests Are Best!
by Jill Tilton Interior Design

Jill Tilton and Jennifer Panganiban
28111 Camino La Ronda, San Juan Capistrano, CA 92675

Originally the service entrance, this back entrance has become the predominate entry for today’s homeowners and their closest friends. The crisp white wainscoting, shiny chrome sconces, crystal chandelier, and mirrored console table add glamour and elegance to an otherwise simple space. The collection of vintage hats and a pot full of umbrellas show the practical side to this area. As you ascend the stairs, be sure to take time to read the reminder, that there is indeed “No place like home.” At the top of the stairs is a utility closet once used for mops and brooms, but has now been transformed into the ideal space for cutting and arranging fresh flowers. Adjacent to this closet is the main linen closet for the house. Here stacks of colorful towels wait to be used in the newly transformed baths; and, linens and pillows are stored for future use.

The stage of the “Harlequin Theater” has a Renaissance backdrop, inspired by Maxfield Parrish and painted by Disney’s scenic artist Gary Thomas. Discover the diamond pattern motif in the glittery glass tiles punctuating the crown molding. The art and music room provides a space to write, create, practice an instrument or read a book. Peek into the bath, which has a European claw foot tub, golden arabesque tiles, custom painted cabinet and mirror with a gold crest.

The “Far East” Foyer serves as a transitional space separating the daily activities of the home from the wing dedicated to relaxation and the arts. Artist Jim Jakeway creates something unique with hand-painted murals. The pagoda chandelier, anchored by the octagonal center table, dominates the space. Decorative pewter leaf on the ceiling and moldings opens the space by adding luminosity. The Collector’s Retreat, once a narrow, confining linen closet, is transformed by removing a wall of cabinets and replacing them with antiqued mirrors that dramatically widens the space. A Murano glass wall covering highlights the ceiling. Soft aquas and cognacs are accented by the ebony stain on the hardwood floor. The bookcase is actually a doorway leading into a secret vault. Inside, a display cabinet holds the collector’s prized possessions.

Our little angel drifts to sleep beneath a star filled twilight sky while a pair 18th century angels seem to listen to bedtime stories being read. In our baby’s room filled with an antique Persian carpet, fine European antiques and heirloom quality art only the rarest toys, award winning books and most modern crib will do. Grisalle botanical paintings, paper-cut botanical, and a Baroque paper-cut mirror only add to the whimsical garden.

Dreamy fabrics of cream, café au lait and toffee create the palette of the Master Bedroom. Thick textured draperies hang from modern cornice boxes. “Carmel Gold” marble accents the new larger scale stone mantel bringing importance to the fireplace. The Vestibule is enhanced by the addition of new crown moulding and accented with a deeper wall color. Two new windows shed light into the room and offer balance to the king size bed displaying Kravet fabrics. A simple architectural design on the ceiling brings to our attention a feeling of increased height to moderate ceiling. The upholstered pieces have been custom designed in modern lines with a sense of traditional softness to bring forth a transitional style.

The old, drab pool house was transformed into a private pool spa with separate wet, grooming and lounge areas. The wet area features a soaking/whirlpool tub that fills from the ceiling along with a multiple jet shower. The grooming area has a built-in vanity with rosewood accents and a glass backsplash. Finally, the lounge area features comfortable chaise lounges and a wet bar. To unify and connect the three spaces, natural stone was used on the floors, and glass tiles along with flawless engineered stone were repeated throughout. To offer contrast, warm wood cabinets and a linen faux treatment on the walls were offset with cooler greens, blues in the fabrics, and tiles. Sleek plumbing fixtures were selected to complement the clean modern design.
